Energy/Sports Drinks: Unhealthy Hydration?

Hi, this is Dr. Reuben Chen and welcome to another Fit Tip. If you listen to the advertising, you might think energy and sports drinks do it all— delivering more energy, improved performance, and better concentration. But do they? Most energy drinks contain large amounts of caffeine, sugar, and other substances that deliver a quick boost of energy. High levels of sugar found in most energy drinks spike your insulin level for a brief amount of time, which translates into a brief surge of energy followed by a crash when that sugar rush ends.

Energy drinks (or “energy shots”) also typically contain three to five times the caffeine in a same-size can of soda. Too much caffeine, and caffeine-like substances such as guarana, can cause side-effects such as: Nervousness Irritability Insomnia Rapid heart rate, and Increased blood pressure So what about sports drinks? Many people believe that sports drinks are the best drinks to replenish lost fluids and electrolytes when exercising, but that’s not true. Many sports drinks contain as much as two-thirds the sugar of sodas. They also typically contain high-fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, and artificial coloring, none of which contribute to optimal health.

The amount of sugar in sports drinks may shock you. For example, a 20-ounce Powerade weighs in at over 7 teaspoons of sugar. A 32-ounce Gatorade has a staggering 14 teaspoons of sugar. A 20-ounce Vitamin Water tips the scales at over 7 teaspoons of sugar.

While this poses no immediate health consequence, over time excess calories from added sugar contribute to obesity and insulin resistance. Instead of drinking in all the sugar, caffeine, and artificial ingredients of so-called energy and sports drinks, opt for healthy hydration and all-natural energy support from Sunrider.
