Acne is a very common skin problem. A lot of people suffer from acne. And I know that even you want to get rid of acne. In fact, You must be using various products or medicines to treat acne.

These products or medicines work in various ways. Some products kill bacteria and reduce acne inflammation. And some products remove excess oil from the skin and decrease acne. But, are these products good for your skin? Do these not have some side effects? Today we’ll discuss this very issue.

So which ingredients are good to treat acne? And how do you use them? 1st ingredient is Benzol peroxide. This is the most common and effective over the counter ingredient to treat acne. It kills acne-causing bacteria and releasing free oxygen radicals helps to cure acne. It removes dead skin cells and unclogs pores by which acne decreases on its own.

Benzoyl peroxide is used in various cleansers, lotions, creams, gels and spot treatments. Because of its antibacterial properties, it proves to be very beneficial for oily skin. Usually in OTC products, benzoyl peroxide is present in a concentration of 2.5 to 10 percent. But keep in mind that if you use it in a higher concentration, then it can have side effects as well.

It can cause dry skin and skin irritation. Skin can show redness and scaling. If your skin is sensitive, then it can also cause burning or a stinging sensation. This is why don’t use a concentration of more than 2 percent.

Also, use it very carefully because it can bleach your clothes and hair. If after using benzoyl peroxide, you experience swelling and crusting on the skin then stop using it immediately. The 2nd important ingredient is Salicylic acid. This is a beta-hydroxy acid which is very effective and works as a powerful exfoliant.

It prevents your skin pores from clogging. Its concentration is usually 0.5 to 5 percent. It has anti-inflammatory properties as well. It is used in a lot of cosmetic products such as cleansers, spot treatments, and BB cream.

It controls excessive oil production and also stops excessive shedding of cells. It acts as a gentle exfoliator. It removes the upper layer of your skin, i.e., the dead skin layer. It also helps in reducing inflammation.

It is very effective against mild forms of acne like blackheads and whiteheads. If you have red bumps on your skin, then salicylic acid can be useful for you. But it can have possible side effects like stinging and skin irritation. The 3rd ingredient is Alpha hydroxy acids.

In acne products, two types of alpha hydroxy acids are used which are glycolic acid and lactic acid. These acids are extracted from sugar-containing fruits. They exfoliate the skin and help in reducing skin inflammation. These acids also help in making skin new and smoother.

You can apply them to your entire face. These are used in various Washes, peels, moisturisers and serums. But your skin can become more susceptible to sun damage because of these. This is it is very important to apply sun protection along with this treatment.

The 4th ingredient is topical retinol gel and retinoids. Topical retinol is highly effective to treat moderate to severe acne. It prevents new acne from forming. It stimulates production of your skin cells.

Its results start to show within eight to twelve weeks, Topical retinoids are also used to treat acne. People who have mixed type acne or inflammatory acne, for them these topical retinoids prove very beneficial. Topical retinoids don’t have severe side effects like oral retinoids. But they can have skin redness, itching or dryness as side effects.

That is why do consult your doctor before taking Retinoids. The 5th ingredient is Azelaic acid. Azelaic acid is also used in controlling acne. It is a very useful supportive treatment.

It is also helpful in reducing post-acne spots hyperpigmentation. The 6th ingredient is Topical Antibiotics. A lot of times to treat acne, Topical Antibiotics such as Erythromycin and Clindamycin are also used. They reduce skin infection.

They don’t reach the deep layer of your skin. These are less effective than systemic antibiotics. Taking these without doctor’s advice may lead to side effects. Consult your doctor and take some other medication.

This medicine depends on your acne type, skin type, severity of the acne, and age. Other than this, you also need to take some precautions with the medicine. Follow a healthy skincare routine. Cleanse and moisturise your skin properly.

Use a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 while outside in sunshine. Don’t touch your skin repeatedly with your hands. The bacteria on your hands can transfer to your face and increase your acne even more. Do not pop your acne or pimple.

Don’t scratch it with your nails. This can further ruin your skin condition. Other than this, follow a healthy lifestyle. Keep a check on your diet.

Have a healthy and balanced diet. Incorporate green vegetables, fruits, milk, eggs, chicken and seafood into you diet so as to get all the essential nutrients. Avoid things like junk food, oily food, processed food and cold drinks. If you drink alcohol or smoke, then stop doing so as soon as possible.

Alcohol and cigarettes aggravate acne. Exercise regularly. Manage your stress. Your acne will reduce.
